RESUMO

Extreme climates and the unpredictability of the weather are significant obstacles to agricultural productivity. This study is the first attempt to explore the capacity of nanobonechar (NBC) for promoting climate-smart agriculture. A pot experiment was performed on maize (Zea mays L.) under a deficit irrigation system (40, 70, and 100% irrigation rates) using different soil application rates of the NBC (0, 0.5, 1, and 2% wt/wt). Additionally, the CO2-C efflux rate and cumulative CO2-C were measured in an incubation experiment. The results indicated the best performance of the 1% NBC treatment under a 70% irrigation rate in terms of the fresh and dry weights of maize plants. Total PO43- and Ca2+ were significantly higher in the plants grown in the NBC-amended soil as compared to the control, showing a gradual increase with an increase in the NBC application rate. The improved productivity of maize plants under a deficit irrigation system was associated with enhanced water-holding capacity, organic matter, and bioavailability of cations (Ca2+, K+, and Na+) and anions (PO43- and NO3-) in the soils amended with NBC. The CO2-C efflux rate and cumulative CO2-C emissions remain higher in the NBC-amended soil than in the un-amended soil, pertaining to the high contents of soil organic matter emanating from the NBC. We conclude that NBC could potentially be used as a soil amendment for promoting maize growth under a water stress condition.

RESUMO

Soil moisture reserves are a key factor in maintaining soil fertility and all other related ecosystem services (including carbon sequestration, soil biodiversity, and soil erosion control). In semiarid blown-sand areas under aridification, water preservation is a particularly crucial task for agriculture. The international Diverfarming project (2017-2022), within the EU Horizon 2020 Program, focused on the impacts of crop diversification and low-input practices in all pedoclimatic regions of Europe. In this three-year experiment conducted in the Pannonian region, the impact of intercropping asparagus with different herbs on some provisioning and regulating ecosystem services was evaluated in the Kiskunság sand regions. Relying on findings based on a range of measured physical and chemical soil parameters and on crop yields and qualitative properties, advice was formulated for farmers. The message drawn from the experiment is somewhat ambiguous. The local farmers agree that crop diversification improves soil quality, but deny that it would directly influence farm competitiveness, which primarily depends on cultivation costs (such as fertilization, plant protection, and labour). Further analyses are needed to prove the long-term benefits of diversification through enriching soil microbial life and through the possible reduction of fertilizer use, while water demand is kept at a low level and the same crop-quality is ensured.

RESUMO

The concept of rewilding, which focuses on managing ecosystem functions through self-regulation by restoring trophic interactions through introduced animal species with little human intervention, has gained increasing attention as a proactive and efficient approach to restoring ecosystems quickly and on a large scale. However, the science of rewilding has been criticized for being largely theory-based rather than evidence-based, with available data being geographically biased towards the Netherlands and Scandinavian countries, and a lack of objective data on rewilding effects on soil processes and C sequestration. In response to a call for data-driven experimental rewilding projects focused on national contexts, we collected unique data on the effects of large herbivore rewilding on soil properties from eight sites in the Czech Republic. These include sites with a wide range of edaphic characteristics that were grazed by Exmoor ponies, European bison, and back-bred Bos primigenius cattle (singly or in combination) for 2-6 years on areas ranging from ≈30 to ≈250 ha. Despite the relatively short duration of rewilding actions and considerable variability in the response rate of soil properties to grazing, our results indicate improved nutrient availability (evidenced by higher nitrification rate or higher soluble nitrogen concentration) and accelerated ecosystem metabolism (higher soil microbial biomass and dissolved carbon content). On longer-grazed pastures, rewilding contributed to soil carbon sequestration associated with increased water holding capacity and improved soil structure. However, other soil properties (reduced dissolved P concentration or total P content) showed signs of low P availability in the soils of the rewilding sites. Therefore, carcass retention should be considered where possible. Our data, although limited in number and geographic coverage, allow us to conclude that large ungulate rewilding has the potential to enhance soil carbon sequestration and related ecosystem services in rewilding areas. At the same time, we urge similar monitoring as an essential part of other rewilding projects, which will ultimately allow much more robust conclusions about the effects of this management on soils.

RESUMO

Physical properties of peat are widely applied to detect the quality of peatland ecosystem. A comprehensive dataset on the peat properties is the foundation for the development tool and model of peat ecosystem, especially in region with frequent wildfire. Here we established a tabular dataset for physical properties of lowland tropical peatland in Indonesia. The data were obtained in dry season 2019 and 2023, respectively, at Jambi and Central Kalimantan peatlands. The dataset comprises of 66 peat samples from two land-uses namely secondary forest and ex-burned lowly vegetation. The physical properties are bulk density, porosity, water retention at four pressures (-1, -10, -25, and -1500 kPa), and water holding capacity. In addition, a set parameter of van Genuchten for water retention curve is available. The field-observed dataset provides a solid base for a better understanding of physical peat properties and can be used as a first step to develop peat water retention database in lowland tropical peatlands.

RESUMO

Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising approach for the controlled release of nutrients, particularly phosphorus and potassium. These essential plant nutrients are often applied in excess, leading to environmental pollution and loss of efficiency in crop production. Innovative economic and highly efficient fertilizers are urgently needed to achieve the targeted crop production worldwide in the presence of limited land and water resources. Therefore, in this study, novel, eco-friendly, cost-effective and enhanced efficiency nano-enabled fertilizers, NEF (nWTF1and nWTF2) were synthesized by impregnation of nanostructured water treatment residuals (nWTR) with (KH2PO4 + MgO) at 1:1 and 3:1 (w/w) ratios respectively using a planetary ball mill. The nWTR, nWTF1 and nWTF2 were extensively characterized. The water retention behavior and the sustained release of nutrients from the fabricated nano-enabled fertilizers (nWTF1 and nWTF2) in distilled water and sandy soil were investigated and monitored over time. The water retention capacity of the soil treated with nWTF2 after 26 days was 9.3 times higher than that of soil treated with conventional fertilizer. In addition, the nWTF2 exhibited lower release rates of P, K and Mg nutrients for longer release periods in comparison with the conventional fertilizers. This is a significant advantage over traditional fertilizers, which release nutrients quickly and can lead to leaching and nutrient loss. The main interaction mechanisms of PO4-K-Mg ions with nWTR surface were suggested. The results of the kinetics study revealed that power function was the best suitable model to describe the kinetics of P, K and Mg release data from NEF in water and soil. The produced NEF were applied to Zea maize plants and compared to commercial chemical fertilizer control plants. The obtained results revealed that the nano-enabled fertilizers (nWTF1 and nWTF2) significantly promoted growth, and P content compared with the commercial chemical fertilizer treated plants. The present work demonstrated the power of nano enabled fertilizers as efficient and sustained release nano-fertilizers for sustainable agriculture and pollution free environment.

RESUMO

Enormous amounts of food resources are annually wasted because of microbial contamination, highlighting the critical role of effective food packaging in preventing such losses. However, traditional food packaging faces several limitations, such as low mechanical strength, poor fatigue resistance, and low water retention. In this study, we aimed to prepare nanocellulose hydrogels with enhanced stretchability, fatigue resistance, high water retention, and antibacterial properties using soy hull nanocellulose (SHNC), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), and tannic acid (TA) as raw materials. These hydrogels were applied in food packaging to extend the shelf life of refrigerated chicken. The structure and properties (e.g., mechanical, antibacterial, and barrier properties) of these hydrogels were characterized using different techniques. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed the presence of hydrogen and ester bonds in the hydrogels, whereas scanning electron microscopy revealed the three-dimensional network structure of the hydrogels. Mechanical testing demonstrated that the SHNC/PVA/SA/TA-2 hydrogel exhibited excellent tensile properties (elongation = 160 %), viscoelasticity (storage modulus of 1000 Pa), and mechanical strength (compressive strength = 10 kPa; tensile strength = 0.35 MPa). Moreover, under weak acidic and alkaline conditions, the ester bonds of the hydrogel broke down with an increase in pH, improving its swelling and release properties. The SHNC/PVA/SA/TA-2 hydrogel displayed an equilibrium swelling ratio exceeding 300 %, with a release rate of >80 % for the bioactive substance TA. Notably, antibacterial testing showed that the SHNC/PVA/SA/TA-2 hydrogel effectively deactivated Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, prolonging the shelf life of refrigerated chicken to 10 d. Therefore, the SHNC/PVA/SA/TA hydrogels can be used in food packaging to extend the shelf life of refrigerated meat products. Their cost-effectiveness and simple preparation make them suitable for various applications in the food industry.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Starch is the main component of quinoa seeds. However, quinoa starch has poor solubility in cold water and poor mechanical resistance and is easily aged, which limit its application. Therefore, modification of its structure to improve its functional properties is necessary. RESULTS: This research used acetic anhydride and sodium trimetaphosphate to modify the structure of starch molecules and investigated their influence on bread quality. The results showed that both esterification and crosslinking prevented the aggregation behavior of starch molecules. Moreover, they both decreased the gelatinization enthalpy change and relative crystallinity of the starch. Compared with native starch, modification significantly decreased the gelatinization temperature from 57.01 to 52.01 °C and the esterified starch exhibited the lowest enthalpy change with a 44.2% decrease. Modified starch increased the specific volume and decreased the hardness and chewiness of bread. Modification did not influence the moisture content in bread but impacted the water retention capacity, depending on the degree of modification. Low and medium degrees of modification improved the water retention capacity during storage. By contrast, a high degree of modification (10 g kg-1 crosslinking agent) decreased the water retention capacity. The dually modified quinoa starch (esterified and crosslinked) showed no influence on the textural properties of bread. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that both esterification and crosslinking significantly improved the functional properties of quinoa starch. Crosslinked or esterified quinoa starches have the potential to improve the textural properties of bakery products. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Transfer molded pulp packaging (TMPP) is a viable alternative to single use plastic packaging. TMPP is typically produced from recycled newspapers, but the availability of this feedstock material is declining. Apple pomace (AP) pulp, primarily composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and pectin, can be used as the primary component of TMPP, but its high water retention value (WRV) and separation from other pulps (recycled cardboard (CB) in this study) limits its utilizations in TMPP. A pressing and thermal drying cellulose hornification treatment followed by a repulping step was implemented to reduce pulp WRV and enhance AP and CB fiber entanglements. 11 %, 20 %, and 25 % reductions in WRV were achieved through 1 t-force pressing and drying at 120 °C for 2.5, 15, or 27.5 min, named mild, medium, and strong hornification treatments, respectively. Increased AP and CB fiber entanglements were observed via microscopy with rising hornification drying times. The medium hornification treatment was identified as the optimal treatment for reducing pulp WRV and reducing pulp separation without decreasing pulp sheet tensile strength. This study introduced and validated a novel processing technique for improved functionality of AP-based pulp for packaging applications.

RESUMO

Drought stress poses a significant challenge to maize production, leading to substantial harm to crop growth and yield due to the induction of oxidative stress. Deashed biochar (DAB) in combination with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) presents an effective approach for addressing this problem. DAB improves soil structure by increasing porosity and water retention and enhancing plant nutrient utilization efficiency. The CMC provides advantages to plants by enhancing soil water retention, improving soil structure, and increasing moisture availability to the plant roots. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of DAB and CMC amendments on maize under field capacity (70 FC) and drought stress. Six different treatments were implemented in this study, namely 0 DAB + 0CMC, 25 CMC, 0.5 DAB, 0.5 DAB + 25 CMC, 1 DAB, and 1 DAB + 25 CMC, each with six replications, and they were arranged according to a completely randomized design. Results showed that 1 DAB + 25 CMC caused significant enhancement in maize shoot fresh weight (24.53%), shoot dry weight (38.47%), shoot length (32.23%), root fresh weight (19.03%), root dry weight (87.50%) and root length (69.80%) over control under drought stress. A substantial increase in maize chlorophyll a (40.26%), chlorophyll b (26.92%), total chlorophyll (30.56%), photosynthetic rate (21.35%), transpiration rate (32.61%), and stomatal conductance (91.57%) under drought stress showed the efficiency of 1 DAB + 25 CMC treatment compared to the control. The enhancement in N, P, and K concentrations in both the root and shoot validated the effectiveness of the performance of the 1 DAB + 25 CMC treatment when compared to the control group under drought stress. In conclusion, it is recommended that the application of 1 DAB + 25 CMC serves as a beneficial amendment for alleviating drought stress in maize.

RESUMO

Spatially explicit, quantitative information on soil hydraulic properties is required in various modelling schemes. At European scale, EU-SoilHydroGrids proved its applicability in a number of studies, in ecological predictions, geological and hydrological hazard assessment, agri-environmental models, among others. Inspired by its continental antecedent, an analogous, but larger scale, national, 3D soil hydraulic database was elaborated for the territory of Hungary (HU-SoilHydroGrids) supported by various improvements (i-iv) in the computation process. Pedotransfer functions (PTFs) were built in the form of i) advanced machine learning methods and ensemble models, and trained on the ii) national soil hydrophysical dataset. The set of predictors used in PTFs was supplemented by iii) additional environmental auxiliary variables. Spatial layers of the soil hydraulic parameters were generated using iv) 100 m resolution information on primary soil properties, namely DOSoReMI.hu. HU-SoilHydroGrids provides information on the most frequently required soil hydraulic properties (water content at saturation, field capacity and wilting point, saturated hydraulic conductivity and van Genuchten parameters for the description of the moisture retention curve) with national coverage at 100 m spatial resolution down to 2 m depth for six GSM standard depth layers. The HU-SoilHydroGrids has significantly lower squared error in the case of describing the moisture retention curve and hydraulic conductivity than the EU-SoilHydroGrids. The derived 3D soil hydraulic database (ver1.0) is presently available in National Laboratory for Water Science and Water Safety for project partners in order to test its functional performance in describing hydrological and ecological processes.

RESUMO

This investigation aimed to assess the effects of whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) on the oxidative stability of protein and the ability of Scomberomorus niphoniu surimi balls to retain water after repeated freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles. Ten percent natural whey peptides (NWP), 5% WPH, 10% WPH, 15% WPH, 0.02% butyl hydroxyl anisole (BHA), and a control group that did not receive any treatment were the six groups that were employed in the experiment. The cooking loss, water retention, total sulfhydryl content, and carbonyl content of each group were all measured. Notably, it was found that the surimi balls' capacity to hold onto water and fend off oxidation was enhanced in a dose-dependent manner by the addition of WPH. Furthermore, the results showed that the 15% WPH added to the surimi balls effectively decreased protein oxidation in the F-T cycles and ameliorated the texture deterioration of surimi balls induced by repeated F-T, laying a theoretical foundation for the industrial application of WPH in surimi products.

RESUMO

Water is essential for metabolism and all life processes. Despite this, many organisms distributed across the kingdoms of life survive near-complete desiccation or anhydrobiosis. Increased intracellular viscosity, leading to the formation of a vitrified state is necessary, but not sufficient, for survival while dry. What properties of a vitrified system make it desiccation-tolerant or -sensitive are unknown. We have analyzed 18 different in vitro vitrified systems, composed of one of three protective disaccharides (trehalose, sucrose, or maltose) and glycerol, quantifying their enzyme-protective capacity and their material properties in a dry state. Protection conferred by mixtures containing maltose correlates strongly with increased water content, increased glass-transition temperature, and reduced glass former fragility, while the protection of glasses formed with sucrose correlates with increased glass transition temperature and the protection conferred by trehalose glasses correlates with reduced glass former fragility. Thus, in vitro different vitrified sugars confer protection through distinct material properties. Next, we examined the material properties of a dry desiccation tolerant and intolerant life stage from three different organisms. The dried desiccation tolerant life stage of all organisms had an increased glass transition temperature and reduced glass former fragility relative to its dried desiccation intolerant life stage. These results suggest in nature organismal desiccation tolerance relies on a combination of various material properties. This study advances our understanding of how protective and non-protective glasses differ in terms of material properties that promote anhydrobiosis. This knowledge presents avenues to develop novel stabilization technologies for pharmaceuticals that currently rely on the cold-chain. Statement of significance: For the past three decades the anhydrobiosis field has lived with a paradox, while vitrification is necessary for survival in the dry state, it is not sufficient. Understanding what property(s) distinguishes a desiccation tolerant from an intolerant vitrified system and how anhydrobiotic organisms survive drying is one of the enduring mysteries of organismal physiology. Here we show in vitro the enzyme-protective capacity of different vitrifying sugars can be correlated with distinct material properties. However, in vivo, diverse desiccation tolerant organisms appear to combine these material properties to promote their survival in a dry state.

RESUMO

Soil degradation has become a major global problem owing to the rapid development of agriculture. The problems of soil drought and decreased soil fertility caused by soil degradation severely affect the development of the agricultural and forestry industries. In this study, we designed sodium alginate (SA)/sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) hydrogel based on the activation and crosslinking of inert Ca2+. CaCO3 and SA were mixed, and then, inert Ca2+ was activated to prepare a gel with a stable structure and a uniform interior and exterior. The crosslinking activated by inert Ca2+ enhanced the stability of the hydrogel, and the optimal swelling rate of the hydrogel reached 28.91 g/g, thereby effectively improving the water-holding capacity of the soil (77.6-108.83 g/kg). SLS was degraded into humic acid (HA) and gradually released, demonstrating a positive growth-promoting effect in plant growth experiments. The SA/SLS hydrogel can be used for soil water retention and mitigation to significantly decrease the water loss rate of soil. This study will assist in addressing soil drought and fertility loss.

RESUMO

In this paper, an eco-friendly versatile superabsorbent material was designed for soil improvement, and a synchronous chemical loading strategy was proposed. In this strategy, urea not only acted as fertilizer but also acted as a crosslinker to construct an alginate network. The microstructure, chemical structure, thermal stability and composition of the obtained SA/urea hydrogel were characterized in detail. Adsorption behavior and application performance in agriculture were evaluated. The results demonstrated that urea had two different conformations in the network. The SA/urea hydrogel had abundant pore structures with excellent water absorption performance. It could not only improve the water retention capacity of soil but also release nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium elements with degradation for as long as 9 weeks. Moreover, the hydrogel could promote plant growth, increase the nutritional composition of plants and inhibit the accumulation of harmful nitrate in plants. With advantages, including biodegradability, high water absorption, controllable degradation, excellent water retention, sustained NPK release and improved plant nutrition value, the SA/urea hydrogel has great potential for soil improvement in agriculture as an eco-friendly versatile water retention agent and can be expected to extend to more fields as a novel superabsorbent material.

RESUMO

In this work, saccharide branched cellulose (saccharide b-Cel) was synthesized by combining reducing saccharides with cellulose molecules using Ugi four-component reaction (Ugi-4CR). First, the carboxyl groups required for Ugi-4CR are obtained by carboxymethylating cellulose molecules. Then, saccharide b-Cel with a controlled molecular structure is formed when the terminal aldehyde group of reducing saccharides combines with the carboxyl group and auxiliary functional group. The types of saccharides, the degree of substitution of carboxymethyl groups, and the degree of branching all affect the molecular structure of saccharide b-Cel. Through molecular structural regulation, the relationship between the branching structure and water retention ability of saccharide b-Cel was examined in detail. This work not only provides new insights into the synthesis of cellulose derivatives, but it also provides a template for the synthesis of other biomass derivatives.

RESUMO

Lemon peel represents an interesting by-product owing to its content of dietary fibre (DF) and (poly)phenols, which is of great importance for its valorisation. Hence, the objective of this study was to characterise the DF, total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant capacity of two lemon-peel-derived ingredients using two different methods (drying with warm air and enzymatic hydrolysis with pectinesterase). The analysis included a DF assessment, followed by neutral sugars characterisation through GC-FID and uronic acids determination via colorimetry. Subsequently, TPC and antioxidant capacity using the FRAP method were quantified through spectrophotometry. The swelling capacity (SWC), water retention capacity (WRC), and fat absorption capacity (FAC) were also determined as functional properties. It was observed that pectinesterase treatment led to a reduction in soluble DF and an increase in insoluble DF. This treatment also affected the pectin structure, thereby diminishing its ability to absorb water and fat within its matrix. The TPC was also reduced, resulting in a decrease in antioxidant capacity. Conversely, employing warm air exhibited a noteworthy increase in antioxidant capacity. This underscores its crucial contribution to the valorisation of lemon peel, not only by diminishing the environmental impact but also by enabling the acquisition of fibre ingredients with a noteworthy antioxidant capacity.

RESUMO

The impact of oxidized myoglobin (Mb) on myofibrillar protein (MP) oxidation and water retention was investigated. Results showed that the oxidation of Mb increased with increasing concentration of oxidized linoleic acid (OLA). In the presence of 100 mmol/L OLA, hemin iron decreased by 62.07 % compared to the control group. Further investigation showed that mild oxidation of Mb (≤10 mmol/L OLA) increased the water retention and the absolute value of the zeta potential of MP, whereas excessive oxidation (>10 mmol/L OLA) decreased these properties. With the increase of Mb oxidation, the carbonyl content in MP increased, and α-helices changed to random helix. And the tertiary structure changed. Pearson correlation analysis suggested that oxidized Mb affected the water retention of MP, which was closely related to hemin iron and non-hemin iron. In conclusion, OLA induced Mb oxidation, further promoted MP oxidation and affected its water retention.

RESUMO

The objective of this work is utilizing fly ash to synthesize tobermorite (TOB) with a higher specific surface area and layered structure, and incorporating it into the starch/acrylic acid network to boost the drought resistance, water retention and heavy metal adsorption properties. The water absorption and water retention performance and cadmium adsorption characteristics of tobermorite/leftover rice-based composite hydrogel (TOB@LR-CH) were evaluated by water absorption swelling test, soil evaporation test and batch adsorption experiment. By adjusting the addition of TOB and other synthesized conditions, the swelling property (from 114.80 g/g to 322.64 g/g), water retention (71.80 %, 144 h) and Cd2+ adsorption characteristics (up to 591.36 mg/g) were significantly enhanced. Adding a moderate amount of TOB (2 wt%) provided the most uniform tobermorite dispersion during synthesis, and TOB2@LR-CH exhibited the most stable three-dimensional network and highest proportion of effective TOB. The adsorption behavior of cadmium on TOB2@LR-CH was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models. Additionally, the regeneration test results displayed that the adsorption removal rate of cadmium by TOB2@LR-CH adsorbent remained stable after 5 cycles. This study demonstrates that TOB@LR-CH has good water absorption and water retention potential in arid and semi-arid soils, and also has potential application prospects in remediating Cd(II)-contaminated soil.

RESUMO

About 200 million tons of coal fly ash (CFA) is not effectively used in China every year. To enhance the utilization of biomass waste quinoa husk (QH) and solid waste CFA and reduce the preparation cost of superabsorbent resin (SAR), a low-cost, biodegradable modified quinoa husk-g-poly (acrylic acid)/coal fly ash superabsorbent resin (MQH-g-PAA/CFA SAR) was synthesized using modified quinoa husk (MQH), acrylic acid and CFA and used to improve the drought resistance and fertilizer conservation ability of soil. The surface morphology and performance of SAR were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which provided evidence for improving the properties of SAR by grafting MQH and adding CFA. In addition, the synthesis conditions were studied and optimized, together with the contents of initiator, crosslinker, MQH, and CFA to acrylic acid as well as the neutralization degree of acrylic acid. After optimization, the optimum water absorbency of SAR in deionized water, tap water, and physiological saline was 1302, 356, and 91 g/g respectively. The swelling and water-retention mechanisms of SARs were analyzed by a dynamic model and the results were in good agreement with the experimental data. In the soil experiment, the addition of SAR improved the drought resistance ability of soil, and reduced the leaching loss of fertilizer in the soil (from 49.5 % to 36.7 %). Therefore, this material exhibits significant potential in the field of agriculture and offers a novel approach with economic benefit for the utilization of MQH and CFA.

RESUMO

Phytoplankton is sensitive to changes in river ecosystems. Increasing dams disrupt the continuity of river ecosystems. However, the spatial impacts of dams on phytoplankton have not been well documented. In this study, using multiple statistical analyses, the relationships between environmental drivers and phytoplankton community structures in natural background reaches, reservoirs, and corresponding post-dam reaches were explored in the Jiulong River with multiple cascaded dams, which encountered eutrophication and algal blooms in the past 15 years. Results illustrated that damming exacerbated longitudinal discontinuities of phytoplankton communities. The relative abundance of phytoplankton varied in three types of river sections. The average phytoplankton abundance in the reservoirs (1.62 × 105 cell·L-1) was higher than those in the natural background reaches (5.15 × 104 cell·L-1) and the corresponding downstream reaches (4.55 × 104 cell·L-1). The total ß diversity ranged from 0.38 to 0.89 with an average of 0.64 and dominated by species replacement and least by species richness. The water environmental factors and hydraulic parameters rather than nutrients were more attributable to phytoplankton community variability in three river sections. These findings facilitate the management of rivers with multiple cascade dams by releasing environmental flows, jointly operating cascade hydropower stations, and developing nutrient reduction schemes to mitigate the negative impacts of damming in the river.
